question for all you diy cnc/cad parts guys
Im wanting to buy a small cnc mill to make my own parts. I want to know what type of software you are using and what is the price range is on a small cnc mill I want a 5 axis machine that can cut steel and aluminum. Im a draftsman for a woodworking company using autocad 2008 & Mastercam for our 3 axis cnc router that operates the same as a cnc mill so I do have experience with cad and programming a cnc.

What do you want to do with it? Custom parts for only your use, or make some for friends, or small production runs? It all depends on how much time you have to watch the parts get made.

Hefty price for a 5 axis for garage use IMO. I've always thought that one of these would be sweet for a garage cnc.

It's only 3 axis though...

5 axis for garage?? WOW, good luck!
Are you looking for a benchtop machine, or an actual machining center? But if you're talking 5 axis anything, you're looking at allot of money.
MasterCam is an awesome program and will work great for you.

Yeah 5 axis is gonna cost ya !!! The Haas mini mills would be great for a garage but they are a little pricey and depending on what you want to do may be a little overkill or may not be able to handle the size of work.
There are lots of different options when it comes to machines, but Mastercam is a great program but a nice 3d modeling program would be nice as well, once again just depends what you need it to do If you need 5 axis machine capability I hope you have a decent sized garage and an even bigger pocket book

thats kinda what I thought. Our 3-axis cnc router at work ran about $250,000. its got two 5'x5' table Im sure it would cut aluminum if there was some kinda cooling system setup. The best thing I ever did though was set the spindle speed to 0 and chuck up a sharpie. The boss was amazed at the work of art drawn on a sheet of plywood.
So what does one of the 3-axis bench tops run? If I go three axis I may try to build it myself doesnt seem to difficult and its not like im in a rush lots more time than money.

the 50,000 gets you a used piece of crap look you are not an engineer your best bet is to design your "product" and then make a prototype visual on a disk and contact people that machine parts for a living and have the equipment and stock to make it and they will either buy your idea from you or make parts for you then you can go through the aggravation of marketing and sales with a ton of time and money invested and a potential failure. Look your best bet is to just suggest to manufactures on this forum your idea and maybe if they start right away they might have a prototype in a month or 2.
A$$ grass or cash nothing in life is free.

your looking at min $3000 for a new 3-axis cnc benchtop. This is for something like a sherline. I have a 3-axis cnc router that runs $7000 new. I was fortunate enough to get it for $50 LOL.
Simply put you ar not going to get a 5th-axis and you don't really need it. You can do almost anything with a 3-axis and just work with different setups. If you really wanted to you could add a 4-th axis to the machine later on.
The best thing to do is start looking used in the papers or on craigslist or ebay.

to bad its about $3000 more than I really want to spend on a hobby.
Turtle do you have any experience with these or any other small cnc's.
Or are most of your parts made on larger industrial machines?
