You have a good start, make sure you put enough oil on to saturate the filter compleatly.

MB, when i do mine, i use a Tupperware container ( a plastic food storage container that has a sealed lid to it) and fill it with filter oil. i drop my filter in and fully submerse it into the oil. i literally SOAK it in.
then when its fully soaked in filter oil, i ll squeeze out as much oil as i can back into the storage container form the foam. then i take a small handfull of napkins or paper towels and then roll out the excess oil so the papertowels/napkins soaks up the excess oil from the filter. then install and wash my hands 3 or 4 times to rid them of the super tachy oil. lol.
you can over oil the filter just as easily as undroil. with the main differance being an over oiled filter will not breath well and choke out the motor. and under oiled filter will breath fine, but can allow dirt/sand into the motor.

I don't go as far as timmah, but i use a LOT of oil on the filter, a few drops isn't going to do it. I put on a disposable rubber glove, douse the filter in oil, and work in through to make sure it's thoroughly distributed.

I slop it on thick--totally saturate the filter with oil, dripping wet (in a plastic, zip lock bag). Then I remove as much as I can by squeezing (not wringing) paper towlees around it. Squeeze hard, and keep using clean towells until almost no oil is staining the towells anymore. (it does not take long). Now, I know every open cell is coated with the special tacky foam filter oil, and every cell is open to pass air. Too much oil left fills the open cells, and they won't pass air. No dirt will get through--unless you get into water. Water will carry grit through the tacky open cells--air won't.

If you guys haven't discovered this stuff yet, hold on to your hats! It cleans up with no nasty solvents, is biodegradeable, and works great! I've used it on my dirt bikes for years and now on my Baja. This takes almost all the pain out of maintaining your filters! Check it out, you WONT go back to regular filter goop after using this

So you buy the oil--and a special solvent to wash it out? I never used the stuff on my bikes, because I guess I learned that the products made to be more friendly to the environment usually don't work as well as the products that they replace (oil products--it is always related to oil). May be this stuff works great, and may be it does not work as well as a good PJ1 filter oil--I don't know. The only selling point to me (if it works great) is "biodegradable". I just have not bought into the hype---and I try not to support green products---because they want it all.

I don't really care so much that it's green, otherwise I wouldn't be polluting with a baja It is just a thousand times easier to deal with, and it has to be better for your health than dealing with the other stuff. It comes packaged as a kit with filter rim grease, filter oil, and the detergent. I've started a separate no-toil thread to avoid hijacking this one. I ride in sand and fine dust a lot, and have never had a dirt intrusion problem with this stuff. I have and 06 Kx250f and a 07 Rmz250f. Believe me, if I thought it might damage one of my babies, I would not use it.

I use K&N filter oil (spray can). Spray it on (nice even coat inside and out), throw it in a baggy and squish it around to insure saturation and install it. To clean, I use Simple Green (also bio-degradable). Pour a little into a ziplock bag, toss in filter, close up and squish around for a few min. Rinse in hot water, squeaky clean.

Just so you know, that oil is for gauze filters, not foam. That oil is also no where near as sticky as good foam filter oil.

Yea I Know but I have used this method for a lot of years on Dirt Bikes, Dirt-karts, Dune Buggys, Nitros and my large scales. It has proved to work well for me. I know everyone has their opinions on what is best. Not saying mine is best, just sharing what has worked for me. A test I do every time I clean my filter is to wipe my my finger around the throat of the carb. If I feel any grit, then the filter isn't doing it's job. So far they have and I haven't had the need to change.
Outerwear + TGN Redneck over stock foam. No dirt gettin in

Ok, just making sure, some don't realize that. I always do the same with the throat of the carb, it's the best way to know for sure.

Well, the gasoline I use to clean the filters is hard on the body if you use your bare hands. But I just can't go green man--I just can't do it. I thought about it for a min--and it is just not me.

I have to agree, I have looked at notoil for a long time now, I just refuse to conform

OK, now I'm worried. I have the 2-stage prefilter. I didn't know I was supposed to oil the pre-filter too! And it sounds like I'm not putting nearly enough oil on the filter, either.
Wonderful.

swass.
its important to use filter oil on the inner most pre filter (looks light blue from HPI but once cleaned its white. the blue is the oil).
i have modified my method for a much cleaner oiling process.
i use a samwidch size zip lock baggie. i thurought was the prefilter out in raw gas, then with dawn dishwashing liquid, and rinse the filter from the kitchen faucet with HOT HOT water from the inside out, rotating the filter so the water flushes everything out from inside-towards the outside of the filter. squeeze excess water and let dry.
when its completly dry, i drop the filter/s into a ziplock bag. then i pour in the filter oil, i use BelRey SuperTachey Air Filter oil and they mean SUPER TACHY!! i dont pour alot in, but enough to fully saturate the filter/s. then i zip the bag up and work the oil thru the filter/s. once fully oiled i ll take the filter (one at a time of more than one is done) out useing a handfull of good paper towels, then roll out the excess, but not too much of it. enought that its fully thru the filter, but not so much that its blotchy looking, almost gone. keep it nice and even as much as you can.
then i use the napkin and put the filter on the inner holder and finish the install.
much cleaner and not as much of a mess, plus my hands clean up easier. atleast a little bit.
basically the filter should be full of oil, but not so full it cuts air flow down.
grease the mating end of the filter so it seals to the housing so air MUST go thru the filter, and can not sneak around the side. cover with un oiled outter filter, and then an outerwares elastic air filter cover. well done, you should be good for 3 tanks or so, unless its VERY Dusty where you run, then i would do every tank for a new fresh oiled filter. I try to keep 2 pre filters ready to install in a ziplock bag so they are handy when needed.
